LIAM

It’s just before noon when I get home from running errands. Normally, I use the first of two days off after a twenty-four-hour shift to lie low and relax, but the conversation with Ty amped me up. Figured I might as well burn off the energy and get the hell out of the house before I drove myself crazy thinking about Audrey.

We still text every day, just like we always have, but it’s different now. Not in the way we talk to each other, because we’ve always been a little flirty and silly. But because it means something now. Probably always has.

I’m shoving a couple of frozen pizzas into the freezer just as a knock sounds on the front door.

Mr. Butters lifts his head from where he’s been snoozing in his little cat bed in the living room.

“You expecting company, Butters?” I ruffle his head on the way to the door.

Ty and I rarely have visitors, especially not in the middle of the day, so the knock is as unexpected as the woman standing on the porch when I open the door.

“Ace. What the hell are you doing here?”

She presses her glossy red lips together in a sweet smile and bats her lashes almost nervously. Her rich auburn hair falls in loose curls over her shoulders, and she’s dressed in a simple dress the same light blue shade as her eyes. She’s obviously dressed for work, but she’s a long way from Charleston.

“I was in the area and thought I’d drop by to see Mr. Butters. Assuming he still remembers me.” She holds up a gift bag. “I brought treats just in case.”

On cue, the furball strolls over.

Audrey shoves the bag at me so she can scoop him up and bury her face in his fur. “Oh, baby, I’ve missed you so much,” she coos before she kisses him all over his face. Lucky cat. “I know I should have called first, but I wasn’t sure what time I’d be finished, and I remembered you were off today, so I took a chance.”

“Finished?” I step aside and wave her in. “You in town for work?”

“Yes and no,” she says as she enters, still snuggling Mr. Butters and leaving me in the wake of her sweet perfume.

Fucking hell, she always smells good. And that dress and those heels are doing amazing things for her legs, too. Or maybe I’ve just spent too much time imagining them wrapped around me again.

“Is this a good time? I don’t want to impose if you were in the middle of something.” She searches the space, as if looking for evidence of disturbing me.

“I just got home from the store and the bank, and aside from throwing a pizza in the oven, I’ve got nothing going on except catching up with you.”

She gives me another one of those pretty smiles. “In that case, there’s a treat in the bag for you as well.”

“Yeah?” I peek inside, and sure enough, there’s a gigantic slice of red velvet cake from the Calloway Café sitting next to a bag of cat treats.
